Frequently Asked Questions about Botox

What is botox?

Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin produced by bacteria called Clostridium botulium,
which causes the form of food poisoning we know as botulism. Botulism toxins
bind to nerve endings and prevent muscles from contracting by blocking the release
of acetylcholine, which causes muscle contractions from the nerve. Botulinum toxin
is purified and made safe to then produce botox. To reassure you it has been
estimated that the amount of botox used to treat every client in the world for one
year is the equivalent to one spoonful!

What is it used for?

It was first used by Jean Carruthers in USA in 1987 where patients being treated
for twitching eyes commented on how their wrinkles had improved. It is currently
licensed for use in excessive sweating, cerebral palsy, facial spasm and cervical
dystonia. It has also proved successful in treating migraine, back ache, excessive
salivation and myofacial pain syndrome. It is used daily in the NHS for the above
conditions safely.

How effective is treatment?

In clinical trials, nearly 90% of men and women surveyed rated the improvement
to the appearance of frown lines between their brows as moderate to better one
month after treatment.

What happens during treatment?

After a consultation to discuss your needs and a treatment plan formulated, the
actual treatment is quick and simple. You will be in a prone position on a couch
and asked to frown. The practitioner will mark the areas for treatment. Small
injections will be put into those areas after cleaning with antiseptic solution.

Does it hurt?

Most people liken the sensation to that of an ant sting. Most people have treatment
without the use of anesthetic creams as it is so quick but cream is available
if required.

How long does it take?

The consultation will take ¼ - ½ hour with treatment between 5 – 15 minutes.

What are the side effects?

No serious side effects have been reported when using botox for cosmetic
treatments. Minor side effects occur in a small number of clients and have
usually disappeared within a few days. Immediately after injecting there may
be some mild swelling and redness but this should respond well to ice packs or
arnica. There is the possibility of bruising but this can be covered with makeup.
Rarely a temporary drooping of the eyelid may occur which should resolve within
a few weeks.

Will I look unnatural after treatment?

Botox will create a subtle improvement to your appearance and this is its appeal.
Friends may comment on how relaxed you look but you will still be able to smile
and use expressions. Many people have the treatments during their lunch hour!

There are after care instructions but the main things to note when choosing the
timing of your treatment are: the possibility of bruising; you must stay upright for
4 hours; no alcohol for 4 hours; no flying for 48 hours; no washing hair or facial
treatments for 24 hours.

How long does it take to work?

If you follow the aftercare instructions you should see a visible difference in a
few days. The practitioner will take before photographs and when you come back
for your follow up appointment two weeks later she will take an after photograph
for you to be able to compare. If necessary, top up injections will be given.

How long does it last?

Everyone is different but three to four months is the average.

What will my skin look like if I stop treatment?

Your skin will return to the way it was before you began treatment.

Is there any reason why I could not have treatment?

You will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire that will be assessed by the
practitioner and a Doctor. There are a few reasons why this treatment would be
unsuitable or approached with caution but these will be discussed with you at
your consultation.

What is the best age to have treatment?

Each individual is different with differing skin and uptake rates but it is safe to use
from 18 to 65 years old.

Which areas of the face respond to treatment?

Botox is used for best results on the forehead, between the eyebrows and the
‘crows feet’ at the edge of the eyes.
